NLP (Neuro–Linguistic Programming) is a powerful tool used as a complement to other more traditional coaching techniques. With NLP, change happens not only at a conscious action–oriented level; it also occurs at a deeper level, whereby the full spectrum of the way you represent experiences for yourself and relate to them is tackled to help you move more easily towards your goals. The NLP model strongly focuses on the structure of one’s experience (i.e., the “filters” one applies) rather than its content (i.e., the “story” one derives from an event).
Here are some of the things NLP can help you with:
- To overcome certain types of fears and phobias: public speaking, exams, competitions, heights, closed or empty spaces, etc.
NLP can allow you to develop the ability to stay grounded in times of challenge and stress. For instance, if you have ever felt nervous during public speaking (as if the ground were going to collapse under you...), NLP can assist you to feel more and more at ease, until you become free of the most extreme symptoms of performance anxiety. Similarly, NLP can help you develop the necessary internal resources if you have to take an exam or be part of a competition you feel particularly nervous about.
- To learn how to break through old patterns so you can move towards the desired goals
For instance, you might find that habits that have been standing in your way (like a habit of avoiding conflict at all costs or, conversely, a habit of constantly confronting other people) have been there to somehow support you all the way through. Once you understand the positive intent of these habits, you can easily generate new ways to fulfill that intent and then move naturally on to the next stage of your life.
- To shed new light on past experiences that might have held you back so you can look at the present from a different perspective
NLP can also help you let go of conclusions you have come to based on past experiences. This will allow you to embrace the present from a totally new perspective. For instance, NLP can support you in moving from the belief that you are “not good enough” (based on a history of so–called “failures”) to a perspective where past experiences become an opportunity for learning and for moving further towards your true self and personal journey.
